Venue: Alliance Francaise of Madras
Date: 27th & 28th November 2017
Schedule
1. Rabia | Rage | Dir.: Sebastian Cordero | 27 Nov 2017 | 6.15 pm
Latin American immigrants José María (Gustavo Sánchez Parra) and Rosa (Martina García) strike up a passionate affair in their adopted Spanish homeland, but everything seems stacked against their happiness. The object of lustful catcalls from the natives (who refer to her as “that Colombian girl that everyone wants to screw”), Rosa works as a maid for an elderly, conspicuously wealthy couple who don’t quite mistreat her so much as either ignore or patronize her. Meanwhile, her lover toils as a construction worker for a boss who continually reminds him that he’s “not worth shit here” while living in a tiny room with five other immigrants. Internalizing the European’s disdain for the Latin American, José María manifests this animosity as a pent-up rage that occasionally materializes in the form of violent action.
2. Sin otoño, sin primavera | No fall, no spring | Dir.: Iván Mora Manzano | 27 Nov 2017 | 7.40 pm
No fall, no spring is a “punk ballad” from nine points of view: Lucas, a law student who believes in the anarchy of the imagination; Paula, who sells pills around town and collects stories on her portable recorder; Antonia, Martin and Gloria, who live a love triangle without clear limits; Rafa, a successful businessman who hates his job and ends his relationship with Ana, who develops an attraction towards his neighbour Sofia and her boyfriend Manuel, who leads her to spy on them and manipulate their relationship. Happiness, dissent, evasion, decadence, love and hatred: a choral narrative game of cross stories between young people of the Ecuadorian middle class that manages to create a true generational frieze
3. Prometeo Deportado | Dir.: Fernando Mieles | 2010 | 110 min | 28 Nov 2017 | 6.15 pm
What do a magician, a top model, a writer, a graduate and a champion of open water have in common? All have the same past and destiny. They share with many others the pride and misery of being Ecuadorians. And now they are stuck in the waiting room of an airport of some country of the European Union. There they will try to coexist with many other compatriots and will gradually convert their place of detention, in a small Ecuador.
4. La llamada | The Call | Dir.: David Nieto Wenzell | 2013 | 76 min | 28 Nov 2017 | 8.00 pm
Aurora receives the call from the rector of her 14-year-old son’s school to inform her of the decision to expel him on the last day of school. In her attempt to reach Nicholas’s school, she will have to face her obligations as publicist, daughter, sister and divorced mother. Meanwhile Nico is struggling with the issues of growing up. A chaotic city and an obsolete educational system trap mother and son in an increasingly impersonal world.
