Schedule
1. The Throne | Dir.: Lee Joon-ik | Korea | 2015 | 125 Min | 09 April 2018 | 6.15 PM
King Yeongjo, the longest-ruling monarch of the Joseon Dynasty, held the throne for more than 50 years, but as he himself predicted, is remembered primarily for one single event of his reign: the brutal execution of his son Prince Sado, who was locked in a rice chest for eight days before he died of suffocation and dehydration. According to historical accounts, Sado was a madman who committed sexual crimes and murdered his attendants, but the film takes a more sympathetic view, portraying him as a free spirit with an artistic soul who eventually crumbled under the relentless pressure of his father’s fanatical expectations and strict adherence to Confucian doctrine. 19 Wins and 38 Nominations

A widow (Kim Hye-ja) resides with her mentally challenged son (Won Bin) in a small South Korean town, where she scrapes out a living selling medicinal herbs. Mother and son are plunged into a nightmare when the body of a murdered young girl is discovered. Circumstantial evidence indicates the son’s involvement, and he becomes the prime suspect during the sloppy police investigation. Betrayed by the legal system, the mother takes the law into her own hands to clear her son’s name. 37 Wins and 43 Nominations
3. Cart | Dir.: Boo Ji-young | Korea | 2014 | 110′ Min | 11 April 2018 | 6.00 PM
Based on events that caused an uproar in Korea a few years ago. A hypermarket fired a large group of ‘ajumunis’ (middle-aged women) who had been working for the shop for years, and then re-employed them through an intermediary – of course at lower wages and without the responsibilities an employer normally has. The women occupied the shop, and after being removed by the police continued their protest for months outside the doors. 4 Wins and 7 Nominations
4. Tale of Cinema | Dir.: Hong Sang soo | Korea | 2005 | 89′ Min | 11 April 2018 | 7.50 PM
In Seoul, the paths of two men and one woman intersect and move apart from one another, centering around their love for cinema. A suicidal student meets a young woman who decides to follow him in his fatal gesture. Coming out of a cinema, Tongsu, an unsuccessful filmmaker, spots a beautiful young woman, and recognizes her : she is the main actress in the film he has just seen. The life of this wavering and distressed young man strangely echoes the one of the young man from the beginning. 2 Nominations
