Subscribe We are happy to inform you that, we INDO CINE APPRECIATION FOUNDATION in association with Embassy of Cuba, New Delhi are organizing a Cuban Film Festival from 14-16 November 2016 at Russian Centre of Science & Culture, Chennai.
1. The Eye of the Canary (14 Nov 2016 | 6.30 PM)
Little is known of the childhood and youth of the great 19th-century Cuban liberator, José Martí. This robust biopic imagines his early years. The son of a magistrate, the precocious Martí — “Pepe” to family and friends — takes an early interest in justice. Gradually he enters the nascent independence movement and, not yet 18…”José Martí: The Eye of the Canary was awarded the Ariel for Best Latin American Film at the Mexican Academy Awards in 2011.
2. Cuba Neighborhood (15 Nov-Tue | 6.15 PM)
Over several years, we follow three households and their emotions in a barrio of Havana. Magalis is a nurse, rarely happy. An older man, Ignacio, professes his love for her; her father and her brother quarrel over her brother’s sexual orientation; she thinks about leaving Cuba. Santo’s wife Maria is expecting their first child. Tragedy strikes and Santo leaves, drowning sorrows in alcohol and crime while his son grows up in the care of an aunt wondering where dad is. Vivian and Chino are in love, passionate, but childless. The pressures of a society that demands grandchildren strain their relationship. She tries prayer. Fathers embrace their children.
3. Splatt (15 Nov-Tue | 8.00 PM)
A superstitious middle-aged woman falls in love with a taxi driver, while trying to learn the identity of the unseen person tossing eggs at her.
4. City in Red (16 Nov-Wed | 6.15 PM)
The story is set in 1957 and takes place in 24 hours when the insurrection are told, rebellion and solidarity in Santiago de Cuba during the underground struggle against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
5. El Premio flaco ( 16 Nov-Wed | 7.45 PM)
In a poor neighbourhood in Cuba in 1958, Iluminada Pacheco (former clown in a travelling circus), wins a new house in a Rina soap sweestakes. Overwhelmed by this stroke of luck, Iluminada gives away most of her belongings, but months later her life takes a less fortunate turn. This is a film adaptation of Hector Quintero’s play by the same name, which as been very successful when staged in Cuba and around the world.
