Poor, hungry peasant Macario longs for just one good meal on the Day of the Dead. After his wife cooks a turkey for him, he meets three apparitions, the Devil, God, and Death. Each asks him to share his turkey, but he refuses all except Death. In return, Death gives him a bottle of water which will heal any illness. Soon, Macario is wealthier than the village doctor, which draws the attention of the feared Inquisition.

Mercedes dances for money with the clients of Salon Mexico, a famous cabaret in Mexico City. Her younger sister Beatriz studies in an expensive private school, paid by Mercedes. Obviously, young Beatriz doesn’t know about her sister’s job. Troubles begin when Mercedes wins a danzon contest with Paco, her pimp. But Paco refuses to share the prize with Mercedes.

Quino is a Mexican diver who discovers a pearl at the bottom of the sea. He and his wife Juana, and their son have just taken possession of a pearl that is worth thousands. Everyday people try to get in on the cash even Pearl Dealers try to rip them off. When Quino is attacked one day, he kills his attackers in self defense. His brother suggests their only hope is to leave the village. But on their journey to give their son an education they never had, someone may just do anything to prevent it.

4. Here’s The Point | Ahi esta el detalle | 1940 | 112 min | b&w | Spanish | Dir: June Bustillo Oro| (15 June 2017 | 7.15 pm)

Cantinflas is the boyfriend of Paz, the housemaid of Cayetano Lastre. Cantinflas is waiting at dinnertime outside the mansion for Paz’s whistle: a sign for Cantinflas to enter the kitchen to eat. This time his girlfriend has a favor to ask him, that of killing the dog “Bobby”. Cantinflas kills the dog “Bobby” with a gun. However, inside the house, Cayetano plots a scheme to expose his wife Dolores del Paso’s supposed “adultery” with her ex-boyfriend, Bobby Lechuga, a gangster. Confusion arises when Bobby Lechuga is killed and Cantinflas admits to killing Bobby (the dog, not the gangster), but is arrested anyway and put on trial…

During the Mexican Revolution, a macho rebel general falls in love with the independent-minded daughter of an aristocrat in the town he is occupying. The revolutionary Jose Juan Reyes takes the town of Cholula, Puebla, and takes the money of the rich men of the zone for the Mexican Revolution. Jose Juan falls in love with the Señorita Beatriz Peñafiel, the explosive daughter of the richest man of the area.

6. Tender Little Pumpkin | Calbacitas tiernas | 1949 | 101 min | b&w | Spanish | Dir: Gilberto Martinez Solares | (16 June 2017 | 7.30 pm)

“Tin Tan” is broke, who is harassed by his creditors, so he comes up with a plan to put an international musical show with four beautiful women. But matters get complicated when the four women want the leading role in the show, besides, the quartet falls in love with him.
